MISSION:
The mission of Scouting America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This position supports the mission and operations of Scouting America, Orange County Council, Ed Laird Scout Camp at the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center, and Oso Lake Scout Camp. They are primarily responsible for the development, programming, staffing, delivery, and budget of high-quality programs. The Program Director should have a strong background in youth programming, camp operations, and Scouting America.
REQUIREMENTS


  • Minimum 25 years of age
  • College degree in education, recreation, youth development, or relevant field is preferred. Degree required to become a commissioned professional.
  • Currently registered with or willing to be registered with Scouting America.
  • Hold a current BSA Camp Director and/or Program Director National Camping School certification or be able to earn and maintain certification within nine (9) months of hiring
  • Maintain minimum certification in Red Cross Adult and Pediatric First Aid, CPR, and AED or similarly recognized training
  • Has or can obtain within 60 days required trainings for the California Childcare Provider licensure:

    • Preventive Health and Safety Training for Childcare Providers (8 hours)
    • Pediatric CPR/First Aid course for Childcare Providers (8 hours)


    • American Camp Association Camp Director Certificate (preferred)
    • Minimum two (2) years management experience
    • Minimum two (2) seasons of camp experience


      POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

      • Oversee, develop, and grow day and overnight programs
      • Maintain, develop, and create relationships with current units, volunteers, campmasters, and committee members
      • Recruit, hire, train, evaluate, and maintain seasonal, part-time, and full-time staff and volunteers to lead and support programs
      • Maintain and work with relevant volunteers and committees
      • Oversee budgets and achieve net income and participation objectives for assigned programs, staff, and activities
      • Must have communication skills and be able to explain the program's goals and objectives to the public and guests
      • Maintain, inventory, and order program equipment and materials
      • Maintain a climate that attracts and motivates a diverse staff and volunteers of top qualified people
      • Exhibit a thorough understanding Scouting America National Camp Accreditation Program (NCAP), American Camp Association (ACA) guidelines, American Red Cross (ARC), and industry best practices, while tailoring implementation to enhance the unique needs and goals of Scouting America, Orange County Council.
      • Oversee and develop curriculum that meets California Common Core State Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, and other applicable standards
      • Provide quality service through timely communication, regular meetings, training events, and activities
      • Participates in IROEC and Scouting America Orange County Council staff meetings, training, and enhancement activities.
      • Facilitate operations of Scouting and other programs
      • Maintain the property and program areas by completing regular inspections and fulfilling or communicating any needs

        • Maintain and uphold standard operating procedures
        • Delivery of timely and professional feedback about inventory, personnel, or other needs


        • Support the overall operations of Scouting America, Orange County Council.


          ADDITIONAL SKILLSETS

          • Basic computer literacy, including usage of Microsoft Office products and electronic record systems.
          • Ability to communicate clearly, positively, and professionally with others.
          • Personify professionalism and exhibit excellent customer service to all staff and guests.
          • The ability to operate in a leadership role.
          • Ability to think critically and prioritize when given multiple assigned tasks.
          • Fluency in written and spoken English.
          • Bi-lingual (preferred)

            • Must be able to spend significant time outdoors
            • Ability to lift, carry, and balance 75 pounds

            • Constantly able to bend and scoop, sit, and stand, possess hand-eye-foot coordination, and perform good manual dexterity.

              Working in a camp environment includes providing customer service, solving problems, and cooperation with others, regardless of your title. It also requires a desire to develop and work with youth, which can occasionally lead to challenging interactions.
